Many think that the doors of entering the Indian defence services open only after the Plus Two exams. This is mainly because students just out of school can appear for the NDA exams, the most common defence services exam to most people. However, for those who have decided late that they want to join the Indian Army or the Air Force or even the Navy, they have that option after they graduate. It can be a simple graduation in some cases and BTech in others.

Let us look at those options here.
The Combined Defence Service Exam or CDS is open for any graduate. It should, of course, be from a recognized college or university. The candidate has to be a male, and unmarried. After cracking the CDS, you are liable to enter the Air Force and the Army. This exam is held by the UPSC or Union Public Service Commission. This exam is conducted twice annually so you have two attempted in a year to make it.

The Short Service Commission or SSC is a special entry into the defence services. The duration of service is 5 years. If you want to get a taste of a soldier’s life, you can try to gain entry through the SSC. This door is open for male and female candidates. If you wish to keep serving, you are offered the option of a Permanent Commission. The eligibility criteria states that you need to be a BTech or BE. You also need 55% or more marks. If you have appeared for the final exams in college, you can apply too.

The Technical Graduates Course or TGC is another option available for BTech or engineering students. You can gain entry into the Indian Army as an officer if you crack this exam. Final year students of BTech can also apply. Female candidates cannot use this option. Another prerequisite is that you have to be mentally and physically up for the challenge.

Finally, there is the option of University Entry Scheme or UES. Candidates with a graduate degree in engineering can apply. Final year students and those before that can apply for the test, but on a provisional basis. Female and male candidates are welcome through this door. By this way, you can join the Army as an engineer.
